Speech Level Singing

... is a technique based on the knowledge and use of the natural bridges in the voice, allowing singers to vocalize with a connected tone from low to high. Traditional vocal methods are limited to using exclusively chest voice for pop and theater styles or head voice for classical styles. These methods offer no connection between the chest and head voice, limiting singers in range and style. Forcing the chest voice up or the head voice down can also lead to strain and, ultimately, vocal damage.

In Speech Level Singing, we deal with three areas of resonation:

The chest voice, mix voice (a blend of chest and head), and head voice. Between each of these areas is a bridge or passaggio, a spot where the resonance shifts from one area of the body to another. Speech Level singers learn how to smooth out these transitions, connect through the bridges and strengthen their weak spots, allowing them freedom of range, repertoire and style. Each student is individually assessed for his or her specific problems, and given exercises to work with to achieve their goals. You can learn to sing with the same comfortable, easily-produced voice you use when you speak, no matter where the note is in your range. When you know how to use your voice correctly, you can have it working great forever!

Singers report the following results from studying Speech Level Singing:
  • Expanded range
  • Endurance; a voice that lasts hours and hours, night after night
  • Improved pitch
  • Connected sound; consistency of tone with no apparent breaks
  • Greater fluidity and agility throughout one's range;
    the flexiblity to sing wherever the emotion of the song takes you, without range limitation

Seth Riggs: The man behind the method

This method was developed by Seth Riggs who struggled for years to learn how to transition between the "breaks" he felt in his own voice. He has spent the last 40 years honing and developing special exercises that teach singers how to sing without strain.

He has taught over 100 Grammy winners using this method, as well as 4 National Metropolitan Opera winners. Stars like Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, and Josh Groban have studied with Seth Riggs (see testimonial section) A few years ago, Seth decided to train and certify a number of instructors to teach his method. All teachers at The Voice Studio are certified, or working towards certification.

No other technique has been able to acquire such laurels because no other technique has proven to be so effective!
