I
was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My
mother was an extremely religious woman; her 4
feet 11 inches belied her enormous spiritual
presence, and she insisted that I attend Saint
Luke’s Baptist Church each Sunday. Singing
in the youth choir on Sunday mornings played a
vital role in my development. Blessed with
talent in the performing arts of voice,
theatre, dancing, gymnastics, and poetry, I
was selected for acting roles, vocal
ensembles, and lead vocals in church and
school.
As a member
of The Tulsa Ghetto Youth Choir, an
organization lauded for their show stomping
performances throughout Black and White
communities in America during the 1960's and
70's civil rights era, I was always grateful
for growing up immersed in genuine Gospel
and Soul music. My musical tastes range
from rock, pop, soul, musicals, jazz, opera
and classical.
In January
2000 I studied with Master Speech Level
Singing (SLS) Instructor David Stroud.
Somewhere along the way, as if by magic, Dave
taught me not to force notes or yell on pitch.
Instead, I learned to connect smoothly through
the bridges in my voice. With much hard work
and continual progress Dave asked me to become
a Speech Level Singing Instructor.
The SLS
organization accepted my application as a
Pre-Certified instructor in January 2005 and I
attended SLS Vocal Camp in Los Angeles. In
October of that year I received my first voice
lesson from Seth Riggs. Seth was not only very
encouraging, skilled and informative, but
positive that I should perform. Seth suggested
that I begin working on a Ray Charles
composition. I returned to San Francisco
wholly inspired. January 2007, I obtained
certification as an SLS Instructor. I have
also studied with other SLS Master
Instructors, Shelly Franklin Rose, Dean Kaelin,
Greg Enriquez, Wendy Parr, and Jeffrey Skouson.
I am
committed to sharing all that I have learned
with my students to give each of you the SLS
vocal technique you will need to achieve your
highest goals.
